On a family weekend trip to Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but hard snow and -30 degree weather. My body decided to spring out another mysterious medical condition that still keeps doctors and specialists puzzled to this very day. What is the condition? Chronic Urticaria or Hives.
It was about 6pm at night and we were ordering pizza. Now, I have had pizza numerous times with no reaction at all. Well, that one night in Drumheller, will never be forgotten. As my sister ran out to get the Benadryl, an anti-histimine used commonly for things such as bug bites, hives, sneezing, etc. However, the one thing is Benadryl, a side effect of it is that it makes you really sleepy.
When we returned home, I was still suffering from bouts of hives on a daily basis and popping Benadryl like it was crazy. As my GP referred me to an Allergy Specialist, soon we were going to find out. Did performed that prick test in which they use tiny eye droppers of possible allergens and drop them on to your arm, then they take a knitting size, knitting needle and poke the allergen into the skin and wait ten minutes to see if a hive appears under any of the allergens.
When I did my first test, the allergen that came back as the possible reason behind my hives was cheese. So all dairy had to be cut out. It was a difference for a couple of months, then BANG! They return on a mission to conquer NEVER! So off to my Allergy Specialist, Dr. Ross Chang for another round of nothing.
Dr. Chang had said in cases were we do not determine the cause it is called, Autoimmune Hives. What does that mean you are probably wondering? Well, for me my Chronic Hives can last from six months to two years, for every single day. Benadryl is the number one allergy medication used to stop the itch, but it does make you rather sleepy. As I have had Chronic Urticaria for 17 years now, I just entered another Chronic Urticaria cycle after being free for so long.
Regular 25mg of Benadryl does not stop the itch for me anymore as I have used to for so many years my body is immuned to it. I found a new nighttime Benadryl, blue gel capsules, 25mg and it works for me.
Just another story about my medical drama.
